Variety Trials with Italian- and Hybrid Ryegrass

Between 2002 and 2004, Agroscope FAL Reckenholz and RAC Changins tested 35 varieties of Italian ryegrass and 20 varieties of hybrid ryegrass at six and seven experimental sites respectively. The varieties were compared for yield, juvenile development, vigour, persistence, disease resistance, winter hardiness and competitive ability. An index value was calculated from the data, allowing for a direct comparison of the tested varieties. According to the results, the following new varieties of Italian ryegrass are recommended: Caribu and Tigris. With hybrid ryegrass Marmota, Leonis and Enduro will be newly added to the «List of Recommended Varieties of Forage Plants».
