Factors influencing the potential cultivation of transgenic crops

If the cultivation of transgenic crops is permitted after the Swiss moratorium on the commercial cultivation of GMPs expiration, it will be of interest to investigate the importance of this new technology and the factors influencing the decision to cultivate GM crops. Using a specific statistical method, interviews conducted with farmers of a research region are analysed with regard to the determinants of the potential willingness to cultivate those crops. Crop-specific characteristics are shown to be important in the decision-making process. Irrespective of the crops, the social environment plays a decisive role in decision-making, and seems to exert a stronger effect in the absence of experience in cultivating transgenic crops
